Moving a Server

January 17, 2008 – 2:07 pm

It can be done with zero downtime quite easily.

1. Set up new server

The following is done one account at a time

2. Copy account to new server, using move account feature in WHM.

3. Edit DNS on old server to point to ip of new site on new server (This will make the change ocurr very quickly and minimize the lost of posts or email)

Repeat steps 2 and 3 until all accounts are moved.

4. Go to your domain registrar and update your nameserver ip’s to reflect the new ip’s on the new server.

Note, if you add a new account to the new server before or within 48 hours after step 4, you will need to set up a DNS zone on the old server and point the DNS zone to the ip of the site on the new server.
